Biography

Caryn comes from a family of artists: her mother is an oil painter, her brother was a wood-turner, her uncle a clothing designer and pastel artist, and her grandmothers were skilled in knitting and crewel work. Surrounded by creativity from a young age, Caryn developed a lifelong passion for the arts.

Caryn holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. After spending several years in the corporate world, she chose to stay home to focus on raising her family. During that time, she continued to nurture her artistic journey through ongoing classes and exploration in various mediums. A move to London for her husband’s employment further expanded her horizons, both culturally and artistically, allowing her to study art and travel extensively - experiences that continue to influence her current work.

Now based on Long Island, New York, Caryn's primary focus is colored pencil, alcohol ink and East Asian brush painting. She has studied colored pencil with Arlene Steinberg, studied botanicals in watercolor with Rose Pelicano, alcohol ink painting with Vera Worthington, and East Asian brush painting with noted instructors including In K Kim, Carolyn Clarke, Sungsook Setton, Sally Feng Fader, Gladys Stewart, and Gan Yu.

Caryn is a 'CPSA' and a five-year merit 'CPX' Signature Member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a 'UKCPS' and 'UKCPSO' Signature Member of the UK Colour Pencil Society, an Elected Member of the American Artists Professional League, a Juried Member of the International Guild of Realism, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and the National Art League.

Her award-winning work has been shown in solo gallery exhibits, national and international juried shows, and group exhibitions, and is held in both corporate and private collections across the United States and Canada.

Caryn's work has been featured in numerous art publications, including International Artist magazine, CP Magic!, Ann Kullberg's Color magazine, Art & Color 365 magazine, Richeson75 exhibition books, Colored Pencil Society of America's To The Point magazine, CP Treasures-Colored Pencil Masterworks from Around the Globe, The Quarterly of the Sumi Society of America, Inc., Strokes of Genius 8, among many others.

She is a contributing artist in the book Masterful Color: Vibrant Colored Pencil Paintings Layer by Layer by Arlene Steinberg.

In her ongoing pursuit of artistic growth, Caryn has participated in workshops with acclaimed artists in colored pencil, alcohol ink, brush painting and bird sketching.
